Bentu Design & Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Students Create A Concrete Sofa

Bentu Design has collaborated with students from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art to create an entirely concrete sofa chair by means of a new approach to conventional concrete-making methods. Rather than pouring the concrete mixture into a wooden molding formwork and then removing the shell to reveal the negative space of the interior cavity, the group instead used a physical object to create the form for their project by covering it in concrete. The resulting product retains all of the Victorian-esque chair’s intricate decorative details, from the leaf and floral motifs to the button cushioning and the curvature of the handrails. Check out pictures of the whole process and the final results of the experimental furniture piece above.
