UnMask Displays Facial Expressions From Behind the Mask

Societies particularly concerned with air quality – particularly in parts of Japan and China – have adopted facial masks as a means of self-protection. The result though, is eerily homogenous, stripping the wonder of a daily commute into a borderline emotionless trudge. The UnMask project, developed by interaction designer Simone Rebaudengo, Paul Adams and Shangai tech site XinCheJian, aims to break down the barriers between technology and everyday objects. A special face mask is the first yield of the project, which uses a custom Arduino-compatible board to sense facial expressions and portray them on an LED board. The results, viewable in the above video, are quite promising – especially for the unpredictable future. Peep the UnMask above, then head here to learn more about the project.
