Azuma Makoto Sets Plants in Inorganic Space in "Iced Flowers"

Tokyo-based florist artist Azuma Makoto sets flowers in ice to observe their life cycle in stunning sculptures. In the exhibition aptly named “Iced Flowers,” Makoto displays a variety of floral arrangements suspended in huge blocks of ice, allowing viewers to see the plants in different perspectives. Eliciting a stark contrast from what is usually organic and free, the blossoms are trapped in clear prisons, and although beautiful, the works evoke a sense of solitude. As the ice begins to melt, the shapes of the bouquets begin to change, and we can see the flowers emerge in this ever-changing art spectacle
